11/8/2025 Robert Plant with Suzi Dian (from the album Saving GraceRobert Plant with Suzi Dian (from the album Saving Grace available on Nonesuch Records/Es Parenza Recordings) (by Danny McCloskey)
During the course of his career, Robert Plant has sat of the peak of the Rock mountain due to his legendary stint as frontman for Led Zeppelin, becoming a Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame inductee for the role as well as residing at the top of 2011 Rolling Stone Readers Poll that dubbed him top vocalist of all time. For a community of artists, however, Robert Plant needs to be looked to as a man who followed his muse, letting his albums since his LZ tenure reflect his own tastes. Robert Plant has been behind the wheel of a solo career for over forty years, generally collaborating with like-minded musicians for his album output, such as his work with Alison Krauss and a host of others. His recent album release, Saving Grace, draws its name from his backing band for the past six years: singer Suzi Dian, drummer Oli Jefferson, guitarist Tony Kelsey, banjo/string player Matt Worley, and cellist Barney Morse-Brown. Saving Grace is credited to Robert Plant with Suzi Dian as he fronts a musical group that makes him happy with his work, Robert stating in interviews that he is enthralled with ‘the sweetness of the whole thing’ as he and the members ‘laugh’ together frequently. Recorded over the course of several years (April 2019 to January 2025) and captured in studios around The Cotswolds and across the Welsh Borders, the songs are re-imaginings of classic Blues cuts from Robert Plant, Suzi Dian, and the band. They drive “Chevrolet” into the album as opening cut on a tune from Memphis Minnie, Lonnie Young, and Donovan. They discuss “Soul of a Man” by running the song over a dark Folk melody on a track written by Blind Willie Johnson, dosing “As I Roved Out” with a psychedelic English Folk Rock rhythm. A quiet descends over the playing when Suzi Dian confides “Too Far from You” as Saving Grace raises a ruckus for “Everybody’s Song” and confesses “I Never Will Marry” as Robert Plant tells the tale of the “Ticket Taker”. Suzi Dian leads the way up “Higher Rock” as the band exit the album under the somber salvation of “Gospel Plough”.
