9/13/2025 Robbie Fulks (from the album Now ThenRobbie Fulks (from the album Now Then available on Compass Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
File Robbie Fulks under Country but don’t keep him there. Past records have been a blast of both irreverence and seriousness in a Country and/or Bluegrass package, delivered with a combination of tongue-in-cheek plus tears-your-eye. His latest release, Now Then, is all you’ve come to expect from Fulks, whip-smart lyrics and easy to ingest melodies via breezy Roots Rock. Soft picking and soft vocals introduce the record with “Workin’ No More Blues” and he throws out the solid memories of a family vacation in the tender “Ocean City”, putting you in the car as it moves East toward a faded beach house with an outside shower, a staple of an East Coast beach abode. The softness continues with the loungey “Your Tormentor” while “The Thirty Year Marriage” is more life-bringing memories. Robbie Fulks delivers the upbeat “Now Now Now Now Now “ as a Punky hopper that’s ripe for a rip around a late 70’s New York City, “Savannah is a Devilish Girl” is a festival ready cut where Fulks voice is matched with clawhammer banjo and front porch fiddle; that voice playing carnival barker and gospel singer on the catchy bounce of “Poor and Sharp Witted.” Thirty years in the biz and a stacked band banging out your songs is going to yield greatness, which Robbie Fulks has earned and achieved.
