River Shook’s past musical life is gone as their present musical life is laid out before us. What was created in the past with band (The Disarmers were killer) and what’s new is equally as good on the River Shook release. The album continues their musical pursuit of subtle Twang, Indie Roots, and heartbreak Country. While an artist may always chase perfection, they likely know may never get there, but listeners and fans know they can come close, much like River Shook does on the release.
Any fan paying attention to Shook’s growth as both person and artist understands the album opener “Free at Last”, a song about moving away from a relationship with the line ‘cutting all ties with my past’, a hint at their own musical movement. Aside from the lyrical details, the tune is musically thick and dramatic. “Without Your Love” sings is straight line from 1970’s Country while River Shook scores a two-step as cuts like “Venom & Gold” and “Blue Vervain” play straight from a dark, Rootsy-Noir songbook. The album closer in “Loving Me Is Like Rolling a Big Old Rock” is a sad, but glorious, singalong, accentuated by River Shook providing heady harmonies.
Clean Country this isn’t and you can thank whoever you choose to thank for that gist; River Shook is a Punk Rocker at heart, and their rough around the edges DIY vibe lives within this entire release. (by Bryant Liggett)
