The thread of adulting runs like a fast current throughout Moving at the Speed of Trees, the recent release from Richie Lawrence. The album opens with first cut “On the Boat” voicing the words of an immigrant. Richie Lawrence offers a backstory, following the footsteps of the newcomer as he establishes himself in an unfamiliar world. Moving at the Speed of Trees continues to showcase stories in song, the tone floating from the tenderness that pours from the piano reverie “I Believe in You”, into an idyllic sway that cradles “Life Long Lived” and over the dancehall spin of “Leaving You”. The players backing Richie Lawrence bring a vast knowledge of the Cosmic Country and Americana sounds that are the lifeblood of Moving at the Speed of Trees. His wife Katie Thomas as well as members of I See Hawks in LA (Rob Waller, Paul Marshall, Victoria Jacobs) and players from Dave Alvin band, Ry Cooder, and John Hiatt joined Tony Gilkyson (X and Lone Justice) to help out on the recording. Richie Lawrence praised the backing musicians, stating ‘it was so fun to play live in the studio with these folks, all masters of their craft—inventive, funky, in the pocket, resourceful, funny, good people, all groove. There would be no record without them. I am forever grateful.’ The rhythms on the album are effervescent as a piano rumble creates a bouncing beat for “The Poetry of Lust” while a tropical patter soundtracks “Isla” and a persistent rhythm moves the feet spinning around the dancefloor with “The Wonderful Waltz”. Richie Lawrence exclaims “Oh Me Oh My” for the tale of a traveling troubadour and as he borrows a cut from Ray Bonneville (“Lone Freighter’s Wail”) while Moving at the Speed of Trees strides across the groove running underneath the lyrical spit of politics for “InFable”.
