Rhett Miller has a knack for describing vivid scenes. Whether writing Cowpunk tunes that detail long lonely nights thanks to cheap whiskey and bad choices with his long running band Old 97’s, or more tender explorations of life, love, and questionable relationships on his solo release. The pictures that Rhett Miller paints are literary tomes, detailed stories on a complementing musical background. His tenth (TENTH!) solo outing, A Lifetime of Riding by Night, is just that; Rhett Miller wearing his heart on his sleeve, holding his palms out for all to see. He is a storyteller that omits few details in his short novella’s of song Structured like a book, A Lifetime of Riding by Night picks “A Little Song (Prologue)” to open this gentle release with a 41-second intro. Each of the cuts that follow playing out like a short story all penned with the same wit and wisdom. Rhett Miller nails the specifics with such detail that the skin of his characters become that of the listener. You stand beside the gal in “Ellie on the Wharf” as she forever spies the ships that float on the sea. You are in the audience of the Charlotte Performing Arts Center in “Be Mine” and you hear the bronze bells ring post-mass in “The Bells of St. Mike’s” as Miller also drops feelings about his hometown of Dallas. Rhett Miller is no one trick pony, and this release (produced by band-mate Murray Hammond) reveals that he’s just as much a writer as he is a Rocker. These are short stories put to song, detailed cuts of love and loneliness where the story gets co-billing aside the music.
