Rees Shad is a genre chaser. With a load of albums under his belt, he certainly isn’t one to be cornered, especially on his latest release, Porcelain Angel. The multi-instrumentalist drops playful Blues, experimental Folk, and animated Lounge via tunes that are all pieced together through a subtle and stylized approach that weaves the aforementioned genres together as one brand. “Ain’t That the Way” is the kick-off that dips into Folk noir, a stripped-down opener that features a solo picked guitar and a choral of voices. “Coda Blues” is just that, traditional Blues in every sense of the word thanks to dirty guitar, heavy harp, and Rees Shad’s vocal delivery that states ‘I don’t know what I’ve done right, but I sure do wanna do it again’. “Great Big World” is quite playful, ripe to sing to your kids or to lead a sing-along chorus. “A Man Like Me” is Blues Boogie with horns that are laid down punchy and thick, and the horns continue for “Pistol Whip Hangover,” a cut that features a lyrical lament. The title track comes in two parts; “Brighter Daze” and “Brighter Daze (Back Porch Version)” are wonderful blasts of light Lounge, where Shad flirts with a world of Ray Conniff as he also takes a cue from Ipanema. Rees Shad connects a lot of dots, reminding us that genre be damned, all of music is connected.
