Pug Johnson (from the album El Cabron

Pug Johnson (from the album El Cabron on Break Maiden Records/Thirty Tigers) (by Danny McCloskey)

The confessions of a bad boy transform Pug Johnson into a bow-tied, formal attired crooner when he becomes a “Believer”. The heart-hitting ballad showcases Pug behind the microphone in a tune that will have fingers reaching to turn up the volume and reaching for the tissues. The track is one of the many gems on El Cabron, album release number two for the songman who soaked up the sounds in the soil growing up outside of Beaumont, Texas. There is Red Dirt in his music and a whole lot of Country in his stories. To the chagrin of both genres, Pug Johnson cannot fit comfortably into the mold of any one style. Musically, EL Cabron is a Southwest soundtrack touching on Tex-Mex with the sly smirk of the bad boy mentioned in “Believer” for “Thanks to the Cathouse (I’m in the Doghouse with You)’ and gently plucking acoustic notes for the Country Folk confessions that find a man admitting ‘somehow baby I’ve lost my way’ in “Change Myself Today”.

The music soundtracks the backing of all your favorite songs while the lyrics are literary mirrors that promote a neon-lit life. Beginning with the El Cabron title track, Pug Johnson smiles as he points fingers and peals the curtain back on a life well lived with his honky-tonk resume. Love lost bares its soul with “Hole in Me” as El Cabron makes a future plan with its lottery win in “Buy Me a Bayou” and uses “Waxahachie” to unravel the why’s and wherefores of a break-up. He opens the album with a welcome warning quietly stating ‘all aboard’ as Pug Johnson finds himself behind the wheel of a mighty engine barreling down the tracks on “Big Train”. A Southwest breeze mixes it up with a caffeinated beat for “Last Call (with Apologies to Terry Allen)” where Pug Johnson voices a conversation heard at the end of honky tonk night out as he follows a marching piano into “Time Well Wasted” to exit El Cabron. (by Danny McCloskey)
