10/25/2024 Pony Bradshaw (from the album Thus Spoke the FoolPony Bradshaw (from the album Thus Spoke the Fool available on Black Mountain Music/Soundly Music) (by Bryant Liggett)
Pony Bradshaw is a dark wordsmith. Spinning rich tales over a haunting bed of acoustic-bred Southern and Roots Rock. His latest, Thus Spoke the Fool, dabbles in Psychedelic and Gothic Folk, where the narratives are thick and picturesque. Pony Bradshaw kicks this record off with “Ginseng Daddy”, clueing listeners into the fact that there’s a ginseng trade in Georgia, and he sings about it like it’s a family running moonshine. “Viva Appalachia” is a slow, Southern Gothic ballad, loaded with mystery and more nods to Georgia, the cut also including reference to a ‘cat with six toes’. It wouldn’t be a Modern Roots record without a cut that has the click-clack train shuffle, worthy of slapping your feet along to in “The Long Man”. Thus Spoke the Fool is loaded with an ever-present sad fiddle, an instrument present in “By Jeremiah’s Vision” where that solid narrative includes tales of a bartender working at a ‘legion’ who has to deal with drunks from her high school. The sad narrative sings of strong-willed people. “Housebroke” is Country Gospel, “Going to Water” gives a nod to Bluegrass, and “Hiwassee Lament” is Crazy Horse thick. Songwriter and band-leader, historian and storyteller, Pony Bradshaw wears a few hats as he sings songs of family mixed in with tales of history. File Thus Spoke the Fool under Roots Rock while also giving this wonderful piece of music the title of rough around the edges Gospel and Country Grunge.
