9/7/2025 Phil Madeira (from the album FalconPhil Madeira (from the album Falcon available on Mercyland Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
If the Americana genre is taking votes for a Renaissance Man or Woman, Phil Madeira is a contender. He balances an intuitive take on Roots music with touches of Jazz, Country, Rock’n’Roll, and Folk. His records showcase his own guitar work, traveling between an Alt Country backdrop and nods to New Orleans with piano-dosed recordings. His recent release, Falcon, blends all of the above sounds, adding in Rock’n’Soul for “If I Ain’t Got You” and guiding a lyrical flow over the noir-lounge textures of “Maybe”. Opening the album with somber piano chords, Phil Madeira begins the song cycle with a confession of “Impatience” while he recalls the past singing a tune for “Gene”. The many lives of “Needles” are discussed in the story line of the song as a mighty rhythm becomes the driving wheel for “Working at My Own Pace” while a gnarly riff playfully soundtracks the claims of “King of the Lucky Guys” and a late-night groove march underneath “Life in the Name of Love”. A talented songwriter, with cuts covered by Buddy Miller, Garth Brooks, and Keb’ Mo’, Phil Madeira is go-to session and touring musician, bandleader, and long-time member/leader of Emmylou Harris’ backing band, The Red Dirt Boys, also working with Elvis Costello, Alison Krauss, Robert Plant, and Mavis Staples among many others. Falcon hears the music of a New Orleans street parade in the slow-rolling second line beat of “Love is the Better Way” as Phil Madeira exits the album with a man and his piano melody in “Lesson of Love”.
