Paula Boggs Band (from the album Sumatra

Paula Boggs Band (from the album Sumatra available on Boggs Media, LLC) (by Danny McCloskey)
Opening their latest release with the title track, the Paula Boggs Band begin the song cycle with a chant, provided by The Evensong Choir of St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral Seattle. Following the acapella entrance, the band plays a determined Folk Rock to support Paula as she tells a tale of survival. The rattling rhythm becomes the groove that catches wind for “Airline Boogie”. A gentle shuffle hears the story of “The Snow It Melts the Soonest” as “Still Grateful” finds faith in a lonely motel room as a life plays out in the words of “Bard of Vietnam”.
Listening to the album provides a spinning wheel of styles, much like the life experience that Paula Boggs has curated. The musical backing of Sumatra a sound that the band refers to as Soulgrass, a melting pot of Bluegrass, Jazz, and Americana, fit for front porch or concert stage. Never taking the path of a victim, Paula Boggs has walked through her days as a proud queer black woman. In addition to making a mark as a musician, she has worked as a military liaison, educator, public speaker, and philanthropist. She has found success in all of her endeavors due to talent and a strong sense of purpose.
A dark rhythmic rumble matches the black clouds hanging over “Wasting Young Man” as Sumatradelivers “Notes to Quinn” and counts candles along with memories on the birthday cake of “Route 66”. Josh Neumann joins the band in the somber instrumental tones and textures in “Traces of You” while the Paula Boggs Band close out Sumatra with inspiration when they are joined by Blind Boys of Alabama and Valerie June for a rousing spiritual march across “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round”.
