Singer-songwriter Paul Thorn wants to throw out a few life lessons. Those teachable moments come in quite the form; they aren’t delivered via hearty and stern lecture but in a song. Life is Just a Vaporis, however, loaded with exuberant and tough music. Slowed down Boogie Blues, front porch picks, and cuts ripe for FM rock radio, Paul Thorn wants to motivate and inspire. His method of delivering that inspirational motivation will make you want to follow suit and follow his path into personal salvation.
Paul Thorn kicks Life is Just a Vapor off with a stadium Rock rhythm that is followed by punchy horns along with call and response lyrics for “Tough Times Don’t Last”, singing how ‘tough times don’t last, tough people do’. It is a positive and thumping album opener with the band displaying solid and thick playing. “Courage My Love” starts off with a big rock riff, the title track is a great ballad reminding you to live it up while “Geraldine and Ricky” features solid chicken-pickin’ guitar in a killer Bluesy cut. “I’m Just Waiting” is ripe for the masses of big radio and “Wait” is a funny cut that advises patience in the dating world.
Using humor in his songs while throwing out DIY life advice, Paul Thorn is a songwriter that doesn’t take himself very seriously. That notion is obvious in a cut like the uber-catchy “Love You Like a Cigarette.” (by Bryant Liggett)
