Looking into a mirror shows a twofold image, one side the reality of what stares back as another view is the potential that lies underneath the outer surface of flesh. Crown of Roses, the recent release from Patty Griffin, offers the same sort of reflection, her characters and the audio stages they walk fully embrace the human condition. The stories in Crown of Roses reproduces the exact replica that appears in the looking glass as they offer a future vision that includes the hopes, dreams and wishes we all share for tomorrow. Of her songwriting process. Patty Griffin shares that ‘if I try to hit things on the nose, they don’t feel authentic to me. If I can emotionally dance around things, it feels like I can be more honest singing it’. Encouraging us to ‘let go’ of fantasy in favor of reality, Crown of Rosesbegins its song cycle with opening cut “Back at the Start” over a thick, rubbery guitar riff. Soft acoustics notes become the path that finds a “Way Up to the Sky” as a gypsy melody soundtracks the story of “All the Way Home”. Themes of love and loss, grief and resilience are examined in the philosophical confessions in Crown of Roses. Strings bend to wrap around a tale that promotes patience in the search of peace with “Long Time” as Patty Griffin is joined by her former bandmate from the 2010 project Band of Joy, Robert Plant, on the song’s ethereal harmonies. A lush orchestral swoon fills the air as Patty Griffin ponders “The End” while acoustic notes flicker in the black night sky surrounding the dark telling of “Born in a Cage” as she exits Crown of Roses with a whisper in “A Word”.
