Patterson Hood (from the album Exploding Trees and Screaming Airplanes

Patterson Hood (from the album Exploding Trees and Screaming Airplanes available on ATO Records) (by Danny McCloskey)

Opening his new album release with one of the two tracks that title the recording, Patterson Hood opens Exploding Trees and Airplane Screams with “Exploding Trees”. The cut is nearly acapella, Patterson Hood speak/singing lyrics over ambient sounds; a single hand piano ramble, drums, and sonic accents backing the words. The Drive-By Truckers co-founder delivers his first solo outing in a dozen years. For the recording, Patterson Hood chose hometown studios in Portland, Oregon with Chris Funk (The Decemberists, Stephen Malkus and The Jinks) producing and backed by a full-studio of A-list musicians. Sonically, Exploding Trees and Screaming Airplanes is a slight departure from his day gig with Drive-By Truckers. Choosing to wrap the stories with a diverse sound machine, the forward thrust of his band sidesteps power chords and an amped-up drive for a cinematic soundscapes that wraps comfortably around each song.

Lydia Loveless joins Patterson Hood on a slow-marching beat for the tale in “A Werewolf and A Girl” as a rumble of rhythm partners with ethereal sonics to guide “The Pool House”. The melodies of Exploding Trees and Screaming Airplanes support the poetic tone of the words that tell their tales on the album. The crack of a drumbeat defines the movement for “Last Hope” as plucked notes and bowed strings whisper underneath “At Safe Distance” as an electric guitar signals the Rock’n’Roll romp in “The Van Pelt Parties” and acoustics quietly support “Miss Coldiron’s Oldsmobile”. Softly picked acoustic guitar notes lead into “Airplane Screams” while Patterson Hood welcomes Waxahatchee in to duet in “The Forks of Cypress” as he exits Exploding Trees and Screaming Airplanes wishing on a star as he unravels the story of “Pinocchio”.
