Pat Carter (from the album Love in the Time of Capitalism

Pat Carter (from the album Love in the Time of Capitalism available on London Rage Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
The voice of Pat Carter wraps around the songs with an assertive delivery that defines his understanding pf Roots music’s potential, and the ability to mark the music with his own brand, on his recent release, Love in the Time of Capitalism. Warm and inviting, his vocal is conversational. He speaks to the listeners rather than singing at them. A tender appreciation of what the songman does for a living plays out as Pat Carter explains how he soothes his soul when “Why Do Birds” on a dreamscape melody that shines brightly under the sparkle of acoustic guitar notes. Power chords begin the march into “Xenia, Ohio” as Love in the Time of Capitalism ponders “What About Trouble”, rides a rumbling rhythm to “Ridicule the Bourgeois”, hops on board a train-track beat with “Barbed Wire”, and sings a song for “Miranda” on a dark melody.
Berlin-based Pat Carter is frontman and driving wheel for the Euro-Americana band Rodeo FM. Love in the Time of Capitalism puts him solo as he uses the songs on the album as a vehicle to confront contradictions of modern life. Describes the reasoning behind the album title, he states that ‘capitalism sells us the illusion of endless options while making real connection nearly impossible. It teaches us that opening up, showing your true colors, being authentic is a weakness. But without vulnerability, there is no love’. Pat Carter faces the bullies of life in “Taste of Sand” as he finger-picks support for the title track while Love in the Time of Capitalism stands on a “Street Corner” playing a busker’s melody, strutting confidently on the assured rhythms of “Kitchen Door”, and cruises on a persistent groove across “Big Machine”.
