9/17/2025 Otis Gibbs (from the album The Trust of CrowsOtis Gibbs (from the album The Trust of Crows available on Wanamaker Recording Company) (by Bryant Liggett)
Otis Gibbs is the forever Folkie, a singer/songwriter with a load of stories and miles of travel under his belt. It’s like he’s continually far from home, eager to put stories to song for ripe and ready ears. His latest release, The Trust of Crows, is another killer release in a long line of killer releases. Otis Gibbs has Rock band in tow, doing more songs of the daily doings of America as he sings of familiar character’s we all know from all the corners of the world. Album opener, “Heavy River Blues”, rolls from Gospel to Nlues, while Gibbs digs into life on “The Eastside”, which could be any East-side that he has rolled through, a place loaded with people ‘who didn’t get here by making career decisions along the way’. Otis Gibbs has always been a songwriter who can drop something infectious, such as “Ditchweed” is in this record, a laid back Boogie cut ripe for big singalong of “Ditchweed”. There’s Psychedelic Roots digging around the laidback “Maybe in Memphis”, a Neil Young nod in “Mountains” while Gibbs laments ‘too many people, not enough mountains’. “Empty Spaces” is a dreamy song that drifts between love and lonely. Otis Gibbs will take you anywhere, from random porches to even more random street corners. These are Folk songs of life coming from a dude who clearly lives on the road. It’s like Gibbs checks in once every couple years, and we pull back the curtain: an audience getting an earful of his past doings, all put to song.
