The self-described Cosmic Canyon Rock branded by supergroup Other Brother Darryl will dig up a load of musical memories. Roll Shine Roll touches on AM Gold sounds while offering up a casual, Laurel Canyon vibe via mid 1970’s FM AOR (Album Oriented Rock) stations love of Country Rock. OBD also give a nod to the late, great J.J. Cale, with that same kudos handed out for the Rootsier side of late 1960’s tracks from The Rolling Stones. Fast-forward a bunch of decades and the 14-feet of the 7-piece Boston band remains planted firmly in the modern, Alt Country and Americana world. A boatload of harmony kicks things off in “Until I Do”, the harmonies continuing into the soft and sweet “Gypsy Girl”. That Stones reference is directed toward the title track, the line ‘when the sun goes down on your dreams’ has two voices, one a split second behind the other ala Mick and Keith aka The Glimmer Twins. “Today” is Folk with a touch of the psychedelic, “The Ballad of Joni and Graham” is a superb homage to Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash within a haunting front-porch Roots cut, and “Blackadder and Friends” is Avant-Folk loaded with Soul. One listen to Roll Shine Roll was okay while a second time around begged for a third spin. By the fourth time with the album, this reviewer was touting the greatness of the release, from the songwriting all the way down to the pedal steel and keyboards that poke their heads out at glorious times. There’s a lot of good company to keep, and a lot of influences to absorb and push out, as Other Brother Darryl offer up a solid package of tunes that are clean and slick, slow and sweet.
