The latest release from Other Brother Darryl is very much a 2026 record, but this Boston-based band has nailed a 1970’s vibe. Part Laurel Canyon’s breezy Rock with subtle nods to AM-Gold; part Psychedelic Folk, Hey Yeah Hey flies the Alt Country flag in a mellow, Roots Rock package.
There’s a dreamy and hypnotic intro in the “Hey Yeah Hey Prelude” as Other Brother Darryl slowly drifts into your ear before the sound drops into that aforementioned Psych Folk sound via “Waiting on a Stranger”. The band does a delicate dance with jangly guitar on “Take It with You”. “Somethings Afoot” is a lyrical tune of suspicion, the line ‘I’m terrified’ accentuated by its near whispered harmonies, and those harmonies continue with a brighter bounce on the hopeful “Too Right”. The cut nods to the earlier descriptor of AM radio Gold as “Too Right” is comfortable with the canon of 1970’s Soft Rock radio.
If there’s one cut to sum up Other Brother Darryl’s sound it is “Wasted Melody”. The Folk Rock harmonies, the vibraphone induced lounge-vibe, and its overall laidback delivery makes the melody float, and that audio-euphoria continues into “Hold on Hollywood”, the latter showcasing Other Brother Darryl’s ability to drop a little Country guitar twang.
Described as Cosmic Country Americana, Other Brother Darryl and Hey Yeah Hey rub elbows with carefree 1970’s Folk heroes while being right at home kicking it with the Indie Twang circa 2026. (by Bryant Liggett)
