7/19/2025 North Mississippi Allstars (from the album Still Shakin’North Mississippi Allstars (from the album Still Shakin’ available on New West Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The North Mississippi Allstars have been shakin’ since day one. In addition to that movement they’ve also been busy laying down Boogie, Punk, Psychedelia, and improvisational Blues that is always ready to shake a dance floor. Naming their latest, and twelfth release, Still Shakin’ is aptly definition of the band’s motives, mission and motions, a solid description for the group led by the Dickinson Brothers, Luther and Cody. They start of with a banger; “Preachin’ Blues” is a kicking opener with a Punk charge. While these sonic volleys have been a band signature, they lay down grooves via “Stay All Night”. which features Robert Kimbrough and Joey Williams, and Gospel on “Pray for Peace”, a cut with that NMAS signature, marching groove ready to strut down the aisle for Sunday Service. “K.C. Jones (Part II)” is led by Cody’s vocals and funk-heavy keys with the band being joined by JoJo Hermann and Grahame Lesh, while “Poor Boy” (featuring longtime collaborator Dwayne Burnside) and “John Henry” are rough and dirty, ripe and ready dashing into that branded Allstar blast off of Luther’s tripped out, punchy, and perfect guitar solos, as the rest of the band keeps the engine rolling. The addition of Joey Williams and Rayfield ‘Ray Ray’ Hollman round out a solid quartet with equal capabilities at mastering the hippie Blues jams (dig into “Monomyth) or ripping Garage Blues. It is perfect footing for North Mississippi Allstars with plenty of Americana cred.
