New Earth Farmers are a Classic Rock band for the modern days. They’ve got dramatic melodies and a big sound that harkens to the stadium rock of the 1970’s, a throwback package that’s also Indie Rock and laidback Roots delicious. On their latest in The Sky from the Underground New Earth Farmers deliver Blues Rockers along with fist-pump anthems, while also throwing some thick ballads in to boot.
“Big Questions” is a slow, Psychedelic Roots opener that ponders those big questions while acknowledging the realities of life as vocalist Paul Knowles recognizes ‘the hourglass is running low on sand’ while ‘friends keep disappearing to some cosmic wonderland’. It is reality everyone faces no matter who they are or how they vote, love, or live. There’s subtle twang and jangle, or ‘twangle’ for the dreamy “In the Sunlight” while the band dips into 1980’s Roots Pop with “War Inside Our Heads”. It’s a cut with a line that packs a lot when they sing ‘worship the gun,  it may come back to bite us’. It already has. “Behind That Locked Door” is slow Cosmic Country, jangle returning for The Sky from the Underground title track and “Windfall” is a punchy Rocker.
This is a record that’s left and right of the dial radio friendly, a complete Rock package that’s as much yesterday as it is today.
