Muscadine Bloodline are a thick Roots duo that lean into radio friendly Country. On their sophomore effort, Long Leaf Lo-fi, the pair (Charlie Muncaster and Gary Stanton) give you a take-it-as-you-hear-it blast of harmony-heavy Roots Rock, where subtle twang give the record a front porch vibe. The beauty of Long Leaf Lo-fi is in its simplicity. No polish and no slick studio touches, just honest music.
Album opener, in “Goose Chase”, has an Alt Country punch while the guitar fills give the cut an airy, experimental vibe, a feeling that continues as the album rolls into “Silence” thanks to the reverb heavy, Psychedelic guitar that begins the ballad. A cut like “Right Place, Right Time” is more than ready for CMT heavy radio and its accompanying award show, the kind of ballad that would have groups of fans singing along to every word. Muscadine Bloodline nail the storytelling with the heartfelt nod to all military vets in “Peter from Picayune”; it is heavy and genuine. The track lives alongside any decades old Country cut that celebrates those who serve. It’s also a great story.
Muscadine Bloodline’s latest deserves a spot right alongside The Chris Stapleton’s and the Jason Isbell’s as well as any other musicians or bands that fly an Indie flag while also being ready for above the radar fandom. (by Bryant Liggett)
