Murry Hammond’s songwriting may live on the back burner of his fulltime gig, but that doesn’t mean he’s not without his own stack of killer tunes. His bandmate, Rhett Miller, would likely agree that he’s got a killer songwriter that stands to his left when Old 97s are out earning a buck. Dropping his first solo effort since 2008, Trail Songs of the Deep is a 10-song collection of Indie Folk; stretched out cuts that are earthy and ambient where Hammonds warm croon is a star of the show. He is a perfect fit for the western stylings that are abundant from his label-mates on Fluff and Gravy Records. Hamond’ kicks the record off with “3:10 to Liverpool”, an instrumental that treads into spaghetti western territory; a dusty, lonely landscape that continues into “Take this Heart and Lock it Up” and throughout the rest of the record. “Praise the Road” thanks the town ‘that spit me right out’ in a cut where Murry Hammond doesn’t care if the door hits him in the ass or not, the road vibe staying true and driving directly into “Long American Highway”. As the aforementioned croon was referenced as a star of the show, top billing should also go to the album’s ever-present whistle. It’s an identifying instrument, adding some innocent but daring mystery to the whole vibe of the album.
