6/6/2026 Moonlight Mile (from the album Northern LightsMoonlight Mile (from the album Northern Lights as a self-release) (by Danny McCloskey)
Heavy footsteps stride into Northern Lights on the powerful beat of its title track as Moonlight Mile begins the song cycle for his recent release. Formed in Sandy Hook, Kentucky circa 2021, Moonlight Mile is a vehicle for the Appalachian Alt Country musical experience of frontman Jonathan Pennington. The songs give a voice to rural communities when Northern Lights stages the stories of the men and women who live beaten down by addiction and religion as they are lied to by a corrupt government. Moonlight Mile shares the tales of highway heroes looking for an exit (“Headed Back to Omaha”) as it shines a harsh light on small town life (“The Band Plays On”) and looks deeply into a mirror to find secrets (“Sober”). Jonathan Pennington is a story-teller. The men and women walking through his songs stand tall when his characters hold their heads high as they face shortcomings in what seems like an uphill battle of adversity. A hearty beat leads the march towards “Great Value Childers” as slow, somber strums hear the story in “No Heroes”. Assured rhythms map out the sway of “Dancing in the Rain” while slow, studied guitar notes frame the confessions of “The Beautiful Parts” and Moonlight Mile picks out guitar chords as an arrangement for “Marigold”.
