2/15/2025 Miss Tess (from the album Cher RêveMiss Tess (from the album Cher Rêve available as a self-release) (by Danny McCloskey)
The satchel full of songs that Miss Tess masterfully carries across Cher Rêve, her recent release, is a spinning wheel of sound. The common ground for each track is her vocals. An audio chameleon, she shifts from the 1950’s jukebox selection of seductive swoons captured in words and music with “Lord, I Need Somebody Bad Tonight”. She taps into Country AM Gold from the same era for “Nobody Wins” as a freight-train boogie propels “Ride That Train”. The inclusive nature of Roots music finds a like-minded singer/songwriter in Miss Tess. She dubs the release Cher Rêve with a French phrase that translates to ‘My Dream’ or ‘My Dreaming’. The musical visions and sonics of Cher Rêve are soaked in the fertile musical history of the land that gave birth to the recording. South Louisiana was the muse for Cher Rêve. Recorded at Joel Savoy’s studio in Eunice, Louisiana, Miss Tess is backed by A-list talent as the band confidently follows when she steps across the Folk Rock strums of “Learning Not to Care” and dances up to the microphone on a Cajun rhythm for “Take It Easy”. The image of Honky Tonk sawdust is kicked up by shuffling feet is conjured in the sway of “Tennessee Blues” while Cher Rêve devotes to tracks to Cajun French in the dreamy strains of “La Lune, C’est Un Cendrier” and the backcountry Cajun waltz of “La Valse D’Asteur”. Miss Tess honors the land that gave her music when she opens the album with the roadhouse Rock’n’Roll of “Louisiana”.
