Memphis Royal Brothers (from the album Memphis Royal Brothers

Memphis Royal Brothers (from the album Memphis Royal Brothers available on Royal Records/Mother West) (by Bryant Liggett)
The Memphis Royal Brothers release is a celebration of the funky Blues. As is the city of Memphis. While the city boasts Jazz, Country, Indie and, of course, Rock’n’Roll, the aforementioned wouldn’t exist if not for the Blues, and with their self-titled release, Memphis Royal Brothers are giving a head-nodding and hearty fist bump to the genre.
The album offers a laid-back introduction with “Good God I Got the Blues”, a casual kick off to an album that is thick with music history. Charlie Musselwhite kicks down for the cool groove of “Goin’ South”, Wendy Moten provides thick vocals on the ballad “Ready to Rise” and Marcus Scott on “Gimme Back the Keys to my Cadillac” brings both the fun and funky. “Hot Night in June” is a cut that could be set for a scorching evening in any city, but it’s the perfect cut to score a June night on a humid Beale Street, and the closer in “I Fall to Pieces” will forever have a cocktail Jazz touch to the cut no matter who does it, and Marcus Scott’s version has a dreamy, Funk touch.
This is a collection of super players making up a super group blasting out super songs. A full dose of recognition to one of the great American music cities that at times is ignored by both the above and under the radar sect, Memphis Royal Brothers give a reminder that Memphis will forever be music royalty.
