Massy Ferguson (from the album You Can’t Tell Me I’m Not What I Used to Be available on Ruf Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
The balance in life. The distance between speaking a plan and taking action. That is where we find Massy Ferguson, scratching their collective heads amid the jangle of “When You’re Not Around”. A slow, studied pace defines the walk across “Early in the Morning” as drumbeats are the trumpet call for “Shrunken Head”. Massy Ferguson are a band of diverse moods and tones for their songs, all of which can claim allegiance to Americana, delivered with an accent on the Rock’n’Roll side of the genre. Based in Seattle, the band delivers You Can’t Tell Me I’m Not What I Used to Be as a recent release, the album collecting ten cuts of raw Rock’n’Roll. If Americana can grab Vintage status, than the songs of Massy Ferguson fall under Old School Roots, music in the vein of forebearers such as Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks.
The band stroll alongside You Can’t Tell Me I’m Not What I Used to Be in “So Long, Carry On” as the man in the storyline of “I’m Almost There” holds tight to the high wire line that stretches over a metronome beat and disjointed accents of sounds. Navigating the Great Divide between Country and Rock has been a goal for Massy Ferguson for almost two decades. Taking “Headlights and Highbeams” to church, Massy Ferguson wrap choir loft piano beats and salvational tambourine taps to begin the track as You Can’t Tell Me I’m Not What I Used to Be rides a caffeinated groove across “Lights Get Low” and braves a storm for the tale of a “Seaside Town”. A solo piano and cello are the support when Massy Ferguson exit the album with “Lovely Lad”. (by Danny McCloskey)
