The latest from Mary Chapin Carpenter is a record that takes you to the place of its creation. Conceived in rural Scotland, and recorded in Real World Studios in the UK, Looking for the Thread finds Carpenter pairing with Scottish musicians Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart, the result a record that is as verdantly lush as the land where the ideas for this record were born. “Gradh Geal Mo Chridhe”, which translates to “Fair Love of my Heart”, is a soft start, an airy vibe set with cotton-soft vocals that are flat-out dreamy that float across the entire release. Cuts like “Rebecca” and “Hold Everything” have Carpenter’s lovely croon, and when Fowlis and Polwart sing just behind her the results are angelic. “You Know Where You Are” has a wonderful ambient break that finds the song drifting into Celtic territory, a whistle leading a wall of soft sound that builds before breaking back into Carpenter’s delicate vocals. The closer for Looking for the Thread, “Send Love”, finds the ladies quietly pleading for the world to ‘send love’ as keyboards and orchestral instrumentation build a melody that wraps around the vocals. This is an album where the vocals remain the dominant instrument; the instruments remain quiet, setting a subtle mood. It is the vocals that shine.
