John Cowan sounds as great as he did in the 1970’s. Doesn’t matter if he’s banging out NewGrass vocals with the New Grass Revival or howling out a soulful cut with The Doobie Brotehrs, that voice is as powerful as ever, and matched dang-near perfectly with Andrea Zonn. As The Herculeons, the pair drop their debut album, Andrea Zonn & John Cowan: The HercuLeons. It’s a record that floats around NewGrass while also digging into Soul, Rock, and any other styles that will fill up the Americana jar. It is a solid outing produced by Wendy Waldman that also features guest appearances from a who’s who of the Roots realm, including Darrell Scott, Michael McDonald, and Reese Wynans. A subtle but pulsing fiddle gives the album opener, “Resurrection Road”, a NewGrass vibe as it also treads into Gospel territory. The HercuLeons can bang out a ballad when tracks such as “Face of Appalachia”, “The Lucky One”, and “Still I Sing” find Andrea Zonn at the microphone with John Cowan slipping in heavy harmonies on tunes that are soulful and soft. They can also pick up the pace. “Long Way from Home” is an all-around Rocker, a cut loaded with Boogie that features ripping Blues guitar, and “Trying to Survive” has a slight fusion guitar intro before a funky riff kicks in and to carry the cut. The partnership is, and hopefully will remain, a steady pairing, as their sound in The HercuLeons is a mix ready for festival season.
