Marc Broussard has made the educational cover album on the year. Giving the New Orleans nod to some classics from the American Rock’n’Soul songbook of the 1950’s. The album is a nod to the original versions and the timeless sound of each and every note. His recent release, S.O.S.5- Songs of the 50’s serves as an album where Marc Broussard takes few, if no, liberties reprising, and honoring, the tracks in their true form while also hopefully turning some music lovers born post-2000 to important figures of past Pop music. Ray Charles’s “Hallelujah I Love Her So” is stacked with horns and a Bourbon Street bounce while Bobby Darin’s “Dream Lover” is a lovely dreamscape and “Unchained Melody” is full-on romantic and orchestrated strings heavy. Broussard gives a thumbs up to the true OG kings of Rock’n’Roll, covering Little Richard’s “Lucille” and Fats Domino’s “I’m Walkin’” with thumping fun. Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me” is exquisitely lovely and floating, “Stagger Lee” is stacked with killer horns and Marc Broussard’s very own “Baby Girl” sounds like it could have been released from 60-years back. Marc Broussard pulled in some pals for this release, Delbert McClinton’s harp is all over the Poppy “Hey Baby” and Wet Willie’s Jimmy Hall bangs out vocals on the aforementioned “Lucille”. Broussard also looks beyond his own bank account, his latest release also serving as a benefit for Lafayette Louisiana (Broussard’s home town) non-profit Love of People. Let this record push people toward internet digging into Sam Cooke’s, Ray Charles and Little Richard’s back catalog of vintage tracks.
