Luther Dickinson (from the album Dead Blues, Volume 1

Luther Dickinson (from the album Dead Blues, Volume 1 on Strolling Bones Records) (by Danny McCloskey)

Over the course of a career that extends through today with offshoots and tributes, Grateful Dead were renowned for their unique live take on cover versions. Luther Dickinson focuses on a single subject, The Blues, when he covers Grateful Dead tunes written by Willie Dixon, Sam Phillips, Blind Lemon Jefferson. Noah Lewis (Mississippi Sheiks), and more. Datrian Johnson handles the vocal duties for the album as a crew of special guests jump into Dead Blues, Volume 1 when the album welcomes Grahame Lesh (Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh’s son) and Steve Selvidge (The Hold Steady) along with North Mississippi Allstars bandmate (and brother) Cody Dickinson along with many others.

A seductive groove teases the tempo of “King Bee” while gnarly guitar riffs peck at “Little Red Rooster”. A stuttering rhythm cruises underneath “Sitting on Top of the World” and summer breeze psychedelia wraps around “Minglewood Blues”. The music of Dead Blues, Volume 1 is a hybrid of sounds, none of the arrangements bearing any resemblance to the playing of the original artists. Other than the jam band movement of the beats, musically Luther Dickinson also transforms the music of The Dead with his own brand of Jazz-flavored Funk. A mighty groove carries “I Just Want to Make Love to You” as Luther Dickinson surrounds “Mystery Train” on sonic clouds that drift across a dedicated rhythm. Dead Blues, Volume 1 poses the question “Who Do You Love” on a low-rumbling groove that rises up like swamp mist as Luther Dickinson exits the album with Datrian Johnson suggesting a night out in “High Heeled Sneakers”. (by Danny McCloskey)
