Luke Winslow-King throws out a whole load of breezy cool on his latest release, Coast of Light. While the Bloodshot Records artist takes the time on his latest to dig into a wide world of drifting Folk and mellow, dreamy ballads, he still manages to bang out some Psychedelic Blues and Country-tinged Rockabilly, however, for the most part, Coast of Light is a wave of the laid-back tones and textures. The record opens up with the soulful “What’ll We Do”, a cut ripe for a dim cocktail bar. It’s a love song that sounds like it was pulled from 1978. “Coast of Light New” finds his voice just as soft in a subtle piano ballad, before he kicks things up a notch for the dirty “Dangerous Blues”, and the psychedelic, dark Blues noir of “Shoot from the Hip”. “Destiny” returns to a very cool vibe that throws back to old school R & B, the tempo getting picked up for more Blues in “Don’t Worry Your Mind” and the album closer “In the Evening” has Luke Winslow-King showing off some Country Blues chops. Coast of Light is a record where lovers of the soulful will find many things to dig, with a bouncer or two tossed in for good measure.
