1/24/2026 Lucinda Williams (from the album World’s Gone WrongLucinda Williams (from the album World’s Gone Wrong available on Highway 20 Records/Thirty Tigers) (by Bryant Liggett)
Lucinda Williams is keeping great company. Being a top tier draw in the Roots Music and Americana realms has certainly found her rubbing elbows with some of the best in the biz. Her latest, World’s Gone Wrong, finds Williams rubbing those more elbows with Soul, Gospel and even Pop royalty on what is essentially a protest album. Lucinda is right, the world has gone wrong but she knows people will ‘look for comfort in a song’ via the title track. Lucinda Williams has never been afraid of a little Rock in her Roots that arrives via the guitar work of Marc Ford (The Black Crowes) and Doug Pettibone, who co-wrote many of the album’s tracks. Aggressive guitar riffs continue to demand attention when they are on full display in “Somethings Gotta Give” as Lucinda Williams drops a catchy bounce in “How Much Did You Get for Your Soul?” She has never needed to cover however the protests on the album are pushed up a defiant notch with inclusion of a Bob Marley’s “So Much Trouble in the World”; Lucinda joined by some of that aforementioned company in Mavis Staples on the track. “Sing Unburied Sing” finds Williams adding some Rock to Gospel for “Black Tears”, a laidback Blues number that’s fantastic while “Freedom Speaks” is Gospel with a subtle touch of Funk. The power of welcome guests returns with Norah Jones joining Lucinda in the closer of “We’ve Come Too Far to Turn Around”. It is a closing cut of hope and determination on an album that’s acknowledging things are a bit out of whack, but there’s work being, and still needing to be, done to turn this around. This is your score for those actions.
