LoveSeat (from the album Our Way

LoveSeat (from the album Our Way available on Reckless Pedestrian Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
For their debut album, Illinois-based LoveSeat begin with a Country waltz, accented with an accordion trills, to open the song cycle on the release with the mortality leaning words of “The Old Me”. The story is a template for the husband-and-wife duo as they bring tales of experience to balance the lessons and observations of Our Way. Sonically, the sound that tracks the songs moves seamlessly between styles, like the Rock’n’Roll backbeat coaxed by acoustic guitar strums in “Hard to Believe” as the storyline encourages breaking free. Train-track beats match the slowly rising ire of the female lead character in “Clock and Speedometer” as concise life advice is offered, ‘the windshield won’t show her the future like the rear-view shows her the past’.

The man and woman behind the microphones, JJ and Bill Passalacqua, share vocals and blend harmonies for the very human stories that move across Our Way. While LoveSeat become teachers in the tales, they save space for their relationship. A fiddle plays tag with the acoustics of “Kiss Me” while Back Alley Jazz stomps out a rhythm with guitar and a choir of horns to detail the “Ugliest House in Town”. The band stay true to the acoustic Americana brand of Folk Rock that wraps around the diverse sounds captured on Our Way. The couple share writing credits on the album, Bill’s experienced songwriting maturity a good match for the beginner’s intuition that JJ brings to the tunes. A reverie wraps around the finger-picking that supports the visions of a growing-older child in “Time Stands Still” as LoveSeat fill “Our Way Instead” with the choices that have taken them through a life together. Our Way delivers a cover to exit the album as a tropical rhythm invites LoveSeat to spin around the dance floor on the Kirsty MacColl/Pete Glenister cut, “In These Shoes”.
