Lord Huron (from album The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1

Lord Huron (from album The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1 on Whispering Pines Studios/Mercury Records/UMG) (by Danny McCloskey)

The sonics of a Lord Huron recording are as much a part of the final sound as his vocals combined with the electric and acoustic musical backing. The recent Lord Huron release, The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1, wraps its soundscape in melodic beauty that drifts like mist across the tracks. Opening cut “Looking Back” melts onto the album, its sounds blending and blurring to become a unified merging of rhythms. The backing music becomes breaths of air to support the molasses-slow groove of “Digging Up the Past” while “The Comedian” walks to the beat of finger-snaps amid regimented notes and “It All Comes Back” offers its recollections of loss on a staggered melody that ebbs and flows like a tide throughout the cut.

Frontman for Lord Huron, Ben Schneider, defines his decision for The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1album title with questions, asking ‘what if you could choose your fate like choosing a song on a jukebox? What if your finger slipped and you got the B-side instead? What if you misunderstood the meaning of the dang song to begin with’. A sturdy rhythm creates a strong foundation for “Bag of Bones” as the story lives in alienation. The Cosmic Selector Vol 1 ponders “Is There Anybody Out There” as it offers solace, finding a common ground for humanity in “Life is Strange”. Friends stop by the studio for the recording with Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino joining in in for the ethereal “Fire Eternal” and Kristen Stewart offering spoken word support in the sci-fi tale of “Who Laughs Last”.
