8/10/2024 Lonesome Shack (from the album Song of the HorseLonesome Shack (from the album Song of the Horse available on Owl Head Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Lonesome Shack is a trip. Psychedelic Blues? Avant-garde Folk? Haunting and weird. Laid back and cool. Yes, all 6 descriptors accurate for Song of the Horse, a desert album whose sound was born, raised, reared in New Mexico, recorded in Tucson, this is music representative of, while also scoring, the American desert landscape from the Southwest, stretching north through California and dipping down through Mexico. It’s a lovely dose of a desert-noir score. Oh, the ghostly banjo that introduces the album via the opener in the historical warnings in “Lascaux” creates a mystery for cut that’s simple and stripped down. Theres great Blues boogie in “Fresh Bones”, a tune that’s also totally cool in its laidback delivery while the title track has some old-school traditional Blues bounce and “Monsoon Lightning” is slow and tripped out with a full-on trance vibe, “Back to the Light” is a subtle dose of Country Gospel, and the record ends with “The Owl”, another cut of laid-back trippy Blues. There’s a sadness to this record, carving a cut that’s as lonely and deep as the open desert this album scores; Song of the Horse is music that can make a landscape come to life. It’s also super mellow, and way-killer. An awesome release.
