Lowell George would approve. That approval comes via Little Feat (the band he formed and led until his death in 1979) successfully carrying on, dropping Sam’s Place, their 17th studio album, and first in a dozen years. He’d also approve that this band that is part of the Classic Rock canon has continued to drop a signature sound that’s rootsy Funk, played laid back and loosey goosey, an offering that’s bar band intimate and arena Rock loud. Sam’s Place lazily grooves out of the gate with the horn-heavy opener in “Milkman”, following with a hard-driving and up-tempo “You’ll be Mine”. Longtime Little Feat friend and fan Bonnie Raitt joins in for “Long Distance Call”, the band in traditional, Blues band form, a style that carries into “Don’t Go No Further” and “Can’t Be Satisfied”. This is textbook Blues boogie played for the traditionalists. “Last Night” is laid-back and cool with Psychedelic guitar while “Mellow Down Easy” is punchy and thick, played with a Garage Rock lean delivery, and the live closer finds the band racing and ripping through the traditional “Got My Mojo Working”. Classical, Jazz, or in the case of Sam’s Place, Blues, the Little Feat long-timers Bill Payne (keyboards), Kenny Gradney (bass), and Sam Clayton (percussion/vocals) could play any genre and still find a way to give it that Little Feat boogie. Clayton, who has provided backing vocals since the early 1970’s is making his lead-vocal debut, an appropriate assignment as his gritty voice is the perfect instrument for this blues heavy offering.
