2/1/2025 Lilly Hiatt (from the album ForeverLilly Hiatt (from the album Forever available on New West Records) (By Lee Zimmerman)
Lilly Hiatt’s first album in four years Forever is a fully-fueled effort that combines melody and muscle in equal measure. It’s described in the accompanying press materials as ‘a bold, guitar-driven, exploration of maturity and adulthood that grapples with growth and change, escape and anxiety, self-loathing and self-love’, and while that may seem like hyperbole, the songs still manage to ring with both resilience and reflection, courtesy of an anthemic tone that meets expectations. There’s nothing overly complicated as far as Hiatt’s delivery is concerned, but she is obviously determined to stay on point and reinvent herself as the process progresses. That said, Hiatt isn’t bound to any sort of static scenario. She confesses to the fact that she felt dissatisfied because life seemed to be passing her by. As a result, she made the deliberate decision to take a stand, shake things up, and reclaim her own identity. Each of these offerings — with the sole exception of a more contemplative and considered track titled “Man” — come across with a veracity that makes the edge and intent unmistakably clear. Credit Scot Sax with the riveting guitars that bring the sound to full fruition, and Lilly Hiatt herself, for the sneering, Punk perspective in “Kwik-E-Mart”. Likewise, she gets straight to the point on the album’s final cut, the aptly titled “Thoughts”, ‘I thought time was gonna stay in one place, but it’s not’ she declares, allowing her drive and desire to fully take flight. ‘We live in Evelyn’s house’ she declares on a song that lives at the same address (“Evelyn’s House). ‘We’re never gonna move out. We make good music here, and our problems, they disappear’. After five previous albums that marked her as a prodigious talent eager to establish an identity beyond the fact that she happens to be John Hiatt’s daughter — notably, the elder Hiatt contributes an eerie spoken word narrative on the aforementioned “Thoughts”— Forever marks a dynamic new era in her ever-evolving career. It is, in short, a solid step towards the future.
