A “Big Wheel” drives the song cycle for Leftover Salmon when the first track spins into Let’s Party About It, the recent release from the Colorado-based string band. Over the course of 35 years Leftover Salmon have perfected their own brand of blended Bluegrass, infusing the genre with Cajun, Americana, and Rock’n’Roll music. Reggae rhythms underscore the environmental concerns of “Storms” as smooth rhythms carry inspirational advice in “River Takes Me” and “Redbird” returns the band to their Bluegrass origins. Like-minded string band friends stopped by the studio for the recording with Sam Bush (fiddle, mandolin), Jeff Coffin (saxophone), and Jason Carter (fiddle) among the musician’s lending hands. Del McCoury jumps in with vocals for “Twisted Pine”, a song that author, and band member, Drew Emmitt recalls is ‘my way of writing a Bluegrass song that sounds like an old traditional one, to me, it’s a metaphor for the changing seasons and life in general’. The instrumental “Salmon Scales” barrels across the album as Let’s Party About It adds a touch of honky tonk twang to the title track and puts a rhythmic rumble under the horn-dappled melodies of “Good Dog”. Leftover Salmon request a ‘song in the key of the universe’ in “Shine On” as they exit Let’s Party About It with the downtime plans of “Gettin’ It Done”.
