Larkin Poe has dropped an album of riffs. They certainly differentiate said string patterns with some come big and Bluesy while others appear Psychedelic and concise. And while the pair’s recent release Bloom remains heavy, their delivery comes in doses, as the Lovell sisters, Megan and Rebecca, know when to place and pull back that riff. The album opener, “Mockingbird”, finds the sisters laying a Blues base before the vocals drop in; the tune opening up into a solid dose of Blues Rock. Tracks number two and five on the song roster are the two-parter of “Easy Love” Parts 1 and 2; Part One having an Indie Rock, Stone Coyotes vibe, while Part Two drops into thick, heavy Gospel. Larkin Poe layer their playing think for the thumping “Bluephoria” where the vocals hold steady between big, power chord blasts as they keep things under a sonic density through “Nowhere Fast”, a Georgia-proud thumper that is rough and rowdy as they exclaim ‘we’ve got just enough Punk to play a little harder’ before laying out a ‘sleep when we’re dead’ admission; it’s the Punkiest cut of the record. “If God Was a Woman” delivers Trance Blues while pondering a great question. “Pearls” is a blast of more guitars, and “Bloom Again” is a soft and sweet closer that drifts into Blues Folk before they lay down more power chords. These ladies nail the songs to the ceiling, proving they are not afraid of bringing in a bit of power.
