Being tagged a singer/songwriter gives you lots of room to Rock and Roll. At least it does for Langhorne Slim. His latest release, The Dreamin’ Kind, has a solid singer/songwriter vibe that lives below a load of loose Garage Rock. Right out of the gate the combination of genres can be heard. The album opener aptly titled “Rock N Roll”, arrives with power chords, banging piano, and a catchy ‘whoo-ooh-ooh’ that’s both anthemic Punk. It’s a fun start. “Dream Come True” is a Pop gem that drifts into the Alt Country realm via the banjo-inducing twang, and track three in “Loyalty” digs into trashy Blues; it’s a banger. Langhorne Slim digs into some soulful R&B with “On Fire”, while “Rickety Ol’ Bridge” has a western-noir sound that comes with an afterlife vibe and he throws down another heady Rocker in “Strange Companion”, a cut that sounds like it should be pumped in a sports stadium. Within all the Rock and Roll, Langhorne Slim is a singer/songwriter. Not that the aforementioned descriptor dictates a tender sound, but he can pull it off, which he does in the lovely “Dance on Thru”. It’s a cut that comes complete with the advice of ‘let’s have some fun before we’re dead’ and ‘life is short and life is long, so greet each morning with a song’. It’s sturdy advice. Play the bangers and it’s all Rock and Roll, throw in the ballads and you know that Langhorne Slim, for our fortune, lives in a few musical worlds.
