2/7/2026 Kurt Lee Wheeler (from the album LathemtownKurt Lee Wheeler (from the album Lathemtown available on Lathemtown Poets Society Records & Tapes) (by Danny McCloskey)
The songs of Kurt Lee Wheeler are a road map that traces out the lives inhabiting the Southeast side of America in Lathemtown, his recent release. Based in Cherokee County, Georgia, his warm, soulful vocals take the sting out of failure as he bids goodbye to “Portland” while a stripped-back instrumentation floats underneath Kurt Lee Wheeler when he tells the tale in “Hesitant Father”. He encourages his fellow humans to exercise patience over persistent rhythms of “Times Like These (Grass Version)” as a determined groove rumbles across “Too Much Time”. Lathemtown lays down a caffeinated beat for “Faces”, slowing the pace for the advice in “Can’t Fool Fate”, and tracing a path for love over the rambling tale of “Bus Depot”. Backing his stories with a constantly changing soundscape of Country, Americana, and Rock’n’Roll, Kurt Lee Wheeler is the ringmaster on Lathemtown as styles shift and the rhythms rise and fall. Singing the praises of his birthplace, Kurt Lee Wheeler gives a native son’s shout out to “Cherokee County”, quieting the rhythms for “Cactus Flower” and offering a song for the “Girl from California” as Lathemtown tenderly tells the story of “First Choice”. He hears a family history in “Tin Buckets” and borrows a tune from Chris Isaak to offer a Americana version of “Wicked Game”.
