Kris Delmhorst (from the album Ghosts in the Garden available on Kris Delmhorst/Big Bean Music) (by Bryant Liggett)
At first listen you’ll file Kris Delmhorst under Folk, but that would put limits on the Singer/Songwriter. Dig into her latest, Ghosts in the Garden, and you will hear Folk music by definition, but Kris Delmhorst pushes that definition to its outer boundaries, releasing a record that is laid-back dreamy and subtly experimental, while also evoking a sadness as it revisits moods and memories.
The album opener, “Summers Growing Old”, mentions snapdragons and bumblebees on a September evening, drawing up a vision of that particular evening tells you that summer is not only growing old, it is leaving all together, as the storyline doles out the end of season sadness. The Ghosts in the Garden title track is a memory-inducing cut of a detailed past, its sparce instrumentation, including airy pedal steel guitar, adds a touch of the subtle. Psychedelic “Won’t Be Long” is a rough jangle cut and “Detour” is delivered with a slow shuffle. “Age of Innocence” and “Beyond the Boundaries” are textbook Folk and festival-ready cuts, the latter featuring Delmhorst’s vocals backed by Taylor Ashton’s aching croon, wrapped together by the cry of a drifting pedal steel. A favorite cut is “Dematerialize”. It is an upbeat tune with a touch of Punk Roots sounds where Kris Delmhorst is joined by the great Jabe Beyer, a dude whose catalog is worthy of its own investigation.
Layers of instrumentation and loads of lyrics worthy of digging into for your own connections are all over this release. Ghosts in the Garden is a record that’s pushy and pulsing while also delivering dreamy ambience. (by Bryant Liggett)
