Kissing Other ppl (Rachel Baiman and Viv + Riley) (from the album Kissing Other ppl available on Peacedale Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
It was while touring together that Nashville-based singer/songwriter Rachel Baiman and Durham, North Carolina Folk duo Viv & Riley discovered a shared love for many recordings from other artists. Add to the audio component that drew them together the nights spent on stage harmonizing and performing sparked a plan. Kissing Other ppl combines the talents of two careers, channeling the musicians into a single unit. Their self-titled debut showcases their collective and individual capabilities as solo spots at the microphone blend with warm, supportive harmonies.
The backing soundtrack for the songs on Kissin Other ppl is Folk music. Whispered notes gently cradle the observations of “Ain’t No Easy Rider” as sharply plucked strings accent “Born to Lose” while a caffeinated rhythm grounds the three-part harmony of “A Lesson in Love” and somber strums lead into the contemporary tales in “Ashes of American Flags”. Produced by Greg D. Griffith (Amy Ray, Robert Randolph and John Medeski, Le Tigre, Pete Seeger) the studio approach was unique. Rachel Baiman and Viv + Riley recorded their parts in the living room next door to the studio as well as in a 1960s-era bomb shelter on the property that offered natural reverb. The result of the experiments, Kissing Other ppl is equal parts gentle and forceful, capturing the traditional elements of Folk music from a trio curating the genre and moving Folk music forward. The opening track, “Kissing Other People” spins a tale of life’s questions and scenarios while slow, studied strums guide the way into “Hold on Magnolia” and make a request with “Woncha Come on Home” as Kissing Other ppl ponder “Where’d all the Time Go”.
