12/1/2025 Kim Wilson (from the album Slow BurnKim Wilson (from the album Slow Burn available on M.C. Productions) (by Danny McCloskey)
A student, an historian, and a curator of The Blues, Kim Wilson has spent a lifetime working in the genre. A younger Kim Wilson began life studying guitar and trombone until he was introduced to the Blues as a high school senior. On his current release, Slow Burn, the songs stand testament to the quality the singer brings to his own music as filtered through the tracks laid down by the long-forgotten Blues masters such as Tampa Red, Roosevelt Sykes, and Lonnie Johnson. Promising commitment to his own mental health, Kim Wilson opens Slow Burn with hope in “I’m Tryin’”, picking up the pace with his original instrumental “Boogie in E”, slowing to a stroll for “Easy Baby”, and putting his stamp on the Blues classic “Kansas City”. Shouting out in his own style, Kim Wilson struts across his version of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Howlin’ for My Darling”, settling into a Blue groove to discuss the ways of “Lowdown Woman” and sinking deep into the late night Blues cruising of “The Time Has Come” as he leads the charge with his harmonica across “Gotta Have a Horse”. Even infidelity comes with a set of rules, and Slow Burn lays out the details in “Keep Our Business to Yourself” as the album trudges across the molasses-slow groove of “So Many Roads”. Kim Wilson sings the praises of “Sweet Little Angel’ and reverses the sentimental feelings for the points raised in front porch Blues Folk ramble of “Leaving You Was on My Mind”.
