Kier Byrnes & the Kettle Burners know how to give a full-blown Roots Rock DIY-lesson, as they in a succinct package with their latest EP, Dances by Firelight. They come out of the gate swinging with a call and response banger, “Little Bit More, Little Bit Less”, a cut with a hop, skip and a jump that’s big on boogie, coming complete with some Rock’n’Roll accordion. They drop a Roots-noir cut in “Don’t Let Perfect”, a dark ballad with a subtle swooping fiddle that floats under the vocals. The darkness continues in “A Little Bit Further Down the Road”, a haunting track where Byrnes’ croon leads a hopeful ballad that ultimately builds into thick experimental Rock territory thanks to aggressive guitar that’s big and stabbing.
Kier Byrnes & the Kettle Burners close the record with a double of fantastic covers, nodding to two songwriters who are introducing Country and Bluegrass to the Rock’n’Roll crowd. Sturgill Simpson’s “Turtles All the Way Down” is done as straight as the original, soft, heavy, and beautiful, while Billy Strings “Dust in the Baggie” is loaded with chicken-picking guitar, more Rock’n’Roll accordion, Bluegrass banjo, and a whole load of rowdy. Dances by Firelight is required listening for anyone wanting to dig into tunes inspired by Country, Bluegrass, and Blues that come with a touch of Punk Rock sneer.
