As an “Intro” to guide the way into the recently released Kashus Culpepper album, footsteps walk to a car door. Someone slides into the driver’s seat and a key kicks over the engine. For his part behind the wheel, Kashus Culpepper is dial-surfing until the radio gets locked into KC 97FM, the DJ promising a good day of music. And so begins Act 1, the Kashus Culpepper debut. The “Intro” morphs into a hefty Southern Rock beat when Marcus King joins Kashus for the opening song, “Southern Man”. The words are hard-edged and defiant as the story wears its title with pride. A hammered drumbeat begins the slow-burning groove that surrounds, and supports, Kashus Culpepper for the Soul shouts of “Believe”. Sierra Ferrell is on board for the front porch Folk of “Broken Wing”, a lush string arrangement floating like a mist that clears when a sweet Soul sway takes charge for “Stay”, and a percolating rhythm clicks like the white lines falling under the wheels of “That’s the Feeling”. The diverse styles that soundtrack the tracks of Act 1 are connected by the emotional tones and textures that Kashus Culpepper brings to a song. Bright string strums beckon when the instrumentation of “Better Weather” rises slowly to wrap around the love letter the pens the tune as Kashus Culpepper asks questions and forms plans to find a lost weekend with “Out of My Mind”. He pushes out a rapid-fire flow that points fingers with “Is It True” and lets the music drift like fog over the determined heartbeat rhythm that rolls across “In Her Eyes”. Shuffling the music on Act 1 through various styles, Alabama-born Kashus Culpepper curates the Sound of the South that fill his release with the passion of a student born and raised on southern soil with a backing soundtrack of Folk, Soul, Country, and Rock’n’Roll. Finger-picked acoustic guitar notes sparkle to brighten the harsh realities in “After Me?” as Act 1 introduces the “Alabama Beauty Queen”. Kashus Culpepper steps confidently over the staccato rhythms that recount memories with “Mean to Me”, exiting the album channeling 1970’s era Singer/Songwriter Soul with “Cherry Rose”.
