Junkyardfieldtrip (from the album Reach

Junkyardfieldtrip (from the album Reach available on Tonesearch Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
A sonic rumble rises up to announce the title track of the recently release, Reach, from Junkyardfieldtrip. The layers of sound appear seamlessly as “Reach” is guided by confidently whispered vocals. Like its sibling songs on the album, there is a majesty pouring from the arrangement that supports the story as it speaks directly to the human race, issuing a universal message. Based in Western New York state, Junkyardfieldtrip are a decade into life as a band. Beginning with songwriters Mike Gladstone (guitar/vocals) and Rob Smith (lead vocals/guitar), the pair added a backbeat with Emmitt lentillucci (drums) and Don Torpy (bass). Reach is album number two for the band, its songs filled out with memorable melodies, a full use of its musicians, and solid story lines. Junkyardfieldtrip opens a letter to lost love signed with an exit line that reads ‘it ain’t you in “Dear John” as young dreams are recalled for a man taking chances in Music City with “Nashville Feels Like Home”, and strummed acoustic chords surround words of love in “Heart Misunderstood”.

A tangle of notes are a music bed for the honky tonk Rock’n’Roll advice in “Pain is Better” while “Final Grains” questions loneliness as its struts on horn-blasted rhythms fueled by the sounds sweet Soul music. Reach opens its doors on Outlaw beat, baring its soul in “Bottle Away” as Junkyardfieldtrip quiet the melody when the philosophizing in harmony for “Funny”, delivering an honest version of Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years” with a take-no-prisoners rhythm section and high-flying guitar riffs.
