Jubal Lee Young (from the album Squirrels

Jubal Lee Young (from the album Squirrels available as a self-release) (by Danny McCloskey)
The ease of the songs that Jubal Lee Young collects for his recent release, Squirrels, showcases the confidence of the songwriter crafting tunes. A bright acoustic bounce grounds the beans for an inspirational sip of “Coffee” while a soft Southern breeze coaxes the rhythmic sway for “It’s Gonna Be All Right” as the breaths of an accordion subtly guide the groove for the family treasure described in “Hand-Painted Portuguese Punch Bowl”. Jubal Lee Young writes lines with the hand of a master-class songwriter. His stories are an overview of the human conditions we all share, his words making use of both full brush strokes for the images he sees as his observations on the realities hidden underneath the flesh offer accents to fully paint the picture of his characters.
In “Love Happens”, all of the words of advice offered about matters of the heart create clouds of confusion that the light of love pierces as “IDGAF” (I don’t give a fuck) encourages and promotes a free-thinking mind. The songs of Jubal Lee Young have a window facing south when they follow the traditions of a southern-style Folk music that blends in touches of Country, Mountain Music, and Soul. His own brand of music differs from his major influences: his parents. His dad, Steve Young, penned Outlaw Country hits for the Eagles (“Seven Bridges Road”) and Waylon Jennings (“Lonesome, On’ry, and Mean”) while his mom, Terrye Newkirk, brought “My Oklahoma” and “Come Home, Daddy” to the world.
Finding the balance in relationships lays out the motives of the man behind the intention with “Wild Your Untamed Heart” as the finger-picking of an acoustic guitar quiets to let the wisdom of “Kind All the Time” shine as Jubal Lee Young introduces a white-trash millionaire as he puts that kind of “Dumb Luck” on his wish list. The gloves are off when the lines of “Don’t Be a Dickhead” make a request as Jubal lee Young exits Squirrels with the backhanded greeting “Welcome to Nashville, Asshole”. (by Danny McCloskey)
