Listening to As Is, the recent release from Josiah & The Bonnevilles, provides an Americana audio experience. For a genre that relies heavily on stripped-down and raw, As Is leans in the opposite direction. As Is proudly owns its production. The end result of Josiah & The Bonnevilles is heard in the songs. An echoed beginning in “Youth and Dreams” expands into a drumbeat that demands attention and a myriad of sonic touches; accents that playfully romp and rhythms that dominate. Guitar strums immediately define the groove in “One Day at a Time” as the story line bares its soul in order to achieve the personal acceptance that the story embraces. With a vocal that can warble its way into the spotlight, Josiah Leming offers a vulnerability when he lets memories write the story for “Carolina Heart” while As Is scratches out a beat in its chords, the melody rising up as it sends out wish to win the love of “Mountain Girl”.
Josiah & The Bonnevilles cruise on late-night noir as “Hell Without the Flames” lets the rhythms rumble underneath the goodbyes in the tale. The As Is title track is somber meditation between a spoken-word story and an ambient use of a multitude of stringed instruments. The beat immediately drives “Going Gone” as the vocal delivery streams out in a torrent of one-liners and lyrical-keeper observations. Slow footfalls become the sluggish groove that introduces “Good Boy” while As Is takes a stab at understanding the ways of love in “Where It Starts”, Josiah & The Bonnevilles stand tall on the persistently rhythmic groove that courses underneath “Redline”.
