Joshua Hedley (from the album All Hat

Joshua Hedley (from the album All Hat available on New West Records) (by Danny McCloskey)

Both a student and teacher, Joshua Hedley has made his recording career as a curator of Country music throughout the decades. He champions Classic Country and stacks his releases with touches of 1950’s AM radio gold and into late 1970’s Country that was peppered with Rock backbeats. On his recent release, All Hat, he heads back to a time when Country music was delivered with Jazz tones and textures. Produced by Ray Benson (Asleep at the Wheel), All Hat immerses itself in Western Swing as a soundtrack. The album title taps into the line often delivered with a smirk and a sneer, ‘all hat, no cattle’, a phrase usually tossed in the direction of a cowboy/cowgirl dressed for the open range without the muss and fuss of riding a horse or wrangling a steer. Opening the album, Joshua Hedley begins the song cycle with a smile as he fully embraces the dish in opening cut, “All Hat (No Cattle)”.

The rhythms rise when All Hat cooks up “Fresh Hot Biscuits” while it kicks up sawdust on the dance floor with the “Hedliner Polka” instrumental. The groove slows as the beat swings and sways to “Boogie Woogie Tennessee”, staying in ¾ time when dancing couples move a bit slower for “The Waltz I Promised to You”. A hard edge hits All Hat with the cheating tale in “Mean Mama Blues” while the rhythms choose a fast trot for “Come Take a Ride with Me” and find it difficult to cross the border with “Stuck in Texas”. Joshua Hedley’s feet are shuffling slowly when he admits to loving being lonesome in “Crawlin’ Home to You” and confesses to being “Clueless” before exiting the album by rolling the dice and taking chances for “Over the Line”.
