Jolie Laide (from album Creatures

A deep dark rumble guards “Cheyenne”, the opening track on Creatures, the second album release from Jolie Laide. Trading female/male vocal harmonies (Nina Nastasia/Clinton St. John) weave across the album as a soundtrack of dark, dusty rhythms ride underneath the story of “Holly” while a beat hammers out a path for “Something for the Thrill”. Folk acoustics wrap around “Murder Ballad” as Creatures untangles notes that persistently trudge through “Old Collapser” and listens to the heartbeat rhythmic pound in “Small Things”.

The seeds of Jolie Laide were planted when singer/songwriter Nina Nastasia and The Cape May’s Clinton St. John and Jeff MacLeod met in the studio of the late Steve Albini who was producing both acts. The legendary producer suggested the group back Nastasia as a touring band and a bond was formed in the early 2000’s. Decades later, Nina Nastasia joined with Clinton St. John and Jeff MacLeod as well as Morgan Greenwood, a fellow member of the pair’s band, Florida BC, to form Jolie Laide. A wide array of sonics rise and fall throughout Creatures, the songs shapeshifting under the careful guidance of Jolie Laide. Folk electronics sparkle like a night sky over the story of “Dalton” as Creatures exits the album on sharp-angled electric guitar chords that carve out a fractured groove in “Saw the Waves” (by Danny McCloskey)
